I am intrigued by the use of cold, industrial materials to create objects that contain warmth and lyricism. My recent works have grown from the things I love and am most familiar with. The fascination I feel with daily and seasonal rhythms of nature combines with the pleasure I feel while manipulating materials collected from my surroundings. Scraps of discarded wire fencing, fabric and paint are some of the materials I am most comfortable with. The sculptures begin with found wire objects, such as pieces of fencing or animal cages, that I take apart and reconstruct. These skeletal wire structures are then wrapped with fabric and painted. If a more solid form is desired, pieces of painted screen or other metal or plastic meshes are incorporated into the structure. The imagery of my work revolves around rhythms and growth patterns of natural forms. The works are often inspired by momentary glimpses of nature which trigger experiences of rapture. The softening effect of fabric and paint over the rigid wire structures alludes to the reclaiming by nature of man-made objects. The semi-enclosed forms allude to places of mystery, refuge and regeneration. |
